| Dentalium Shell Necklaces- Measure approximately 21-24 inches | |
Dentalium shells were used as money by Pacific Northwest Coast Native Tribes prior to European settlement. The shells only grow in very deep saltwater and were highly valuable as a result of the dangers in harvest. A good sized shell (5 to 6 inches) could purchase a young healthy slave or a family traveling canoe. The shells that I use in my jewelry are very small in comparison to the ones that were owned and used by my ancestors; however, the sentimental value is just as important in the preservation of my culture. –Virginia Adams, Suquamish Tribe |
